                                                                                                  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tenth Annual Zebra Victims Memorial Service
held in san Francisco Friday October 20th, 2006

San Francisco, CA.  About thirty people gathered today at noon today on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to pay their respects during the Tenth Annual Zebra Victims Memorial Service.  The memorial is held each year in memory of those San Franciscans who lost their lives during a tragic but forgotten period of the City’s history.   Between 1973 and 1974, San Francisco was terrorized by a series of black-on-white homicides that had police baffled.  The murders were brutal and the victims randomly chosen.  Altogether, 15 San Franciscans were killed, with an estimated 71 murdered statewide.  Four individuals were eventually convicted, but at least four others are thought to have been involved.

During the quiet and moving ceremony, the names of each of the victims was read and a memorial bell tolled in their honor  During the service, Louis Calabro, Chairman of the Memorial Committee, stated that it is imperative that these innocent victims not have their names and memory buried in silence and shame.  The ceremony ended with a prayer for the victims and their families, and for an end to the divisions in our society.

The group is asking for a permanent Memorial to the Zebra victims in San Francisco.  They are circulating a petition to ask the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution forming a community group to locate an appropriate site and establish a permanent memorial to preserve the memory of the Zebra victims for all future San Franciscans.  For information, contact Louis Calabro at (650) 312-8284.
