W A S H I N G T O N,— Just as it fights terrorism from overseas, the government must also protect gays and the disabled from terror attacks at home, senators said Friday as they tried to push a hate crimes bill toward passage. During
a meeting in May, the state Board of Regents agreed on a policy update
aimed at increasing diversity at the state's colleges and universities. School integration isn't just a numbers game, a new study of cross-race teen friendships shows. In fact, a 50-50 split between two races isn't likely to produce many interracial friendships unless administrators take action to get kids of different races interacting. The unhyphenating of America: Census finds fewer citing European roots. In the last decade, the number of Americans who said they were English, Irish, or from another European derivation dropped by at least 32 million, according to new Census 2000 data. A

There's a difference, he said, between asking provocative questions and being a racist. The University of Michigan Law School's affirmative action case, decided earlier this month, hasn't just split the circuits on the issue of whether race-conscious admissions policies are constitutionally permissible. The 'no-whites-need-apply' caucus A Quota, By Any Other Name... UMich's law school should seek more diversity in students, not just higher numbers. European
American men can jump, so why do black kids come up short in the classroom?
In light of a new federal appeals decision on considering race in law school admissions, the White House on Wednesday advocated "affirmative access" as a means of increasing diversity on college campuses. Once again we have been treated with an egregious example of reverse discrimination, really rampant racism. In her report in The Washington Times ("William and Mary, UVa. favor black law school applicants,", Ellen Sorokin reported that these Virginia institutions in 1999 gave "overwhelming preference to black applicants over white, Hispanic and Asian students." A Court Intrigue: Procedural funny business in a racial-preference case. A coalition of Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and Sikh clergy joined Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) on Capitol Hill Wednesday to announce their support for the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act. The Senate is expected to consider the bill as early as next week. Reparations would be "an insult to hard-working blacks to insist they need some kind of government aid because of something that happened over a century ago," he says. THE DECISION Tuesday by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals upholding race-conscious admissions at the University of Michigan law school makes likely a showdown in the Supreme Court over affirmative action in higher education. BOWLING GREEN, Va., After months of bickering over a black history monument, leaders of this rural county may well have confirmed William Faulkner’s famous observation about the South: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” If you take a look at the University of Michigan's Web site, you can find all sorts of information, including some that would come as news to its administrators. A "Nondiscrimination Policy Notice" says the university "is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race." But the school has been fighting a court battle for years for one simple reason: It discriminates on the basis of race and wants to keep doing so... Against European Americans! In high-poverty New York City schools, teachers are three times as likely to have failed certification exams as other teachers in the state. But racial learning gaps persist even when black and white students come from the same neighborhood and social class. There was no police shooting, no reverends shouting for justice this time — just 300 black people blocking Vine Street on Monday night, pelting cars with rocks, bottles and eggs and yelling “get whitey.” (WHERE IS THE MEDIA?) cheekbone, one concussion. One is shoved in front of a car; another has to have stitches in the side of his head.
